Driving Literacy and Digital Access
The Mobile Library & Media Centre
The Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative’s Mobile Library and Media Centre, made possible through collaboration with Iconic Wines, is much more than a bus—it’s a moving lifeline that brings learning, reading, and digital access to the community.
Each week, this specially equipped vehicle travels to local schools including Lorraine NGK, Weltevrede NGK, Wysersdrift NGK, Brandwacht, Bet-el, Breerivier, and Aan de Doorns - bringing essential educational resources directly to the learners. On Fridays our Onderplaas & Tierstel daycare centres also visit the bus.
For the children, the Mobile Library is a space of opportunity. Learners use library services, schools have access to computers and CAMI, covering subjects like Afrikaans, English, Maths and Perceptual Skills Builder. Additionally, the bus also works with the GreenShoots Maths Programme, an initiative supported by the Department of Education that helps strengthen learners’ numeracy skills.
By combining books and digital learning, the bus helps spark curiosity and encourage a love for reading and self-directed learning.
Beyond the schools, the Mobile Library also offers critical services to the wider community. Adults can access library books, printing services, CV assistance, and computer research facilities. Many residents do not have regular access to these kinds of tools, making the bus a crucial point of connection for job-seekers, learners, and families alike.
In areas where reaching a traditional library may not be possible, this initiative helps close the gap—offering basic computer skills training and encouraging digital literacy in a practical, accessible way.
At its core, the Mobile Library and Media Centre is about inclusion—making sure that no learner or community member is left behind. By offering consistent access to books, learning materials, and digital tools, the programme promotes a culture of reading and life-long learning.
