Young Shooters

We are always very proud to hear news of how our Fairtrade members seize opportunities to uplift their communities. Our Young Shooters club is just that: A local soccer club that was established by Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative dependents to bring hope and opportunities to especially our youth.

Soccer is an extremely popular sport in the Breedekloof Valley. However, very few public schools in the Western Cape host it as an official sport. So, Jim van Heerden together Joseph Daniels took it upon themselves to officially set up their own soccer league, the Young Shooters, in Rawsonville.

The Young Shooters were established on Tierstel farm, but are made up of players from surrounding farms as well: Lorraine, Houmoed, and Florence. Most of which are also Fairtrade-accredited farms. The league includes junior and senior teams, the senior teams consisting of players from the ages of eighteen and over.

It is extremely heart-warming for us at Du Toitskloof Fairtrade Initiative when people from the community take it upon themselves to bring change and create opportunities. Sport is so important in our rural communities as it develops social and leadership skills, develops a sense of belonging, teaches teamwork, and boosts morale and confidence. It also promotes physical health, which is extremely important for any human being.

The coaches have stated that they are very grateful for the support they have received from the people around them, as without any sponsorships they wouldn’t have all the necessary equipment and gear for their soccer tournaments. Du Toitskloof Wines and some of the producers have sponsored needed gear where possible. However, equipment and uniforms need to be updated or replaced regularly in the sports world. So, the managers and coaches are always hard at work seeking sponsorships and support from businesses in the community.

If you would like to get involved or find out how you can make a difference for the Young Shooters, please contact our Fairhills office.
